Bio for John Morris

I started my martial arts training in 1969 as a young boy in Shotokan Karate. I honestly have not much memory of never training in martial arts. My father was a career military USMC/ USN. He was also a Shotokan instructor as well. My father would make me go to his karate class, which was always held in the gym on the Marine base or on the football field depending on the weather that day. At that time there was no kids in martial arts or at least, I never saw any. One day I was beat up by the girl next door and had a black eye.

I went to my father’s sensei Capt. Doug Mollier as USMC fighter pilot and told him that, I did not want any more black eyes, 45 years later here I am still putting on that GI and tying that belt.

I earned my 1st & 2nd degree Black belts in Shotokan & competed at every tournament, which was available to me.

As we moved from base to base, I trained what was available to me, my parents could not pay for classes & since a lot of this was in the Vietnam era, my father would not let us kids be exposed to those not in the military. He did not like civilians to much. On some bases I trained in judo & Tae-Kwon-Do & Kykoushin karate. However since my father was also a Black belt in Shotokan I was required to do my kata's when I came home from school. He had to diagrams of the katas taped on the floor in out garage.

I also got into High school wrestling and wrestled varsity every year in high school & made varsity my 9th grade year & was natural on the ground.

In 1985 I walked into a Shaolin Kempo Karate school of Grandmaster Fred Villari, I instantly fell in love with this great art. It worked with all aspects of fighting Punching, Kicking, and Holding & Throwing. This was also the time; I wanted to fight professional kickboxing and started training. I achieved my Sho-dan very quickly in Shaolin Kempo Karate due to the fact; I was very experienced in Shotokan. I went on to own several dojo's Under Grandmaster Fred Villari & later with a split off group of his USSD under Professor Charles Mattera.

As I was married with a family, life changes & closed a couple of schools & in 1991 moved to my wife’s part of the country in Lima, Ohio. There I walked into a Boxing gym that a promoter Joe Furest had, he said he knew nothing about Kickboxing, but I was more than welcome to train there, if I would get in and bang with his boxing pros. The Boxing trainer was the Late Gary Acres a former champion himself that liked the fact, I was tough and taught me the sport of boxing and turned me pro. At this time also The Manager Joe Furest went into business with a guy named Al Snow a professional wrestler and opened up their own group called the ICW (Independent Championship Wrestling) Joe wanted me to give my hand at it and give it a try since I was a big guy.

There I trained with a former Olympic alt wrestler who was trying to get into pro wrestling this guy turned out to be a WWF world champion & is better known for fighting Royce Gracie in the UFC also a Superfight with Ken Shamrock his name is Dan The Beast Severn to this day we are still good friends.

After this time in Ohio, I learned I hated snow & moved back to California and opened up a Shaolin Kempo School in Santa Rosa, California under United Studios of Self Defense . There I tested for my 5th degree Black belt in Shaolin Kempo at the test was no other than Master Danny Lane, after the test he also promoted me to 5th dan in his group as well. I even was his uke in a training video he made in 2012.

I closed my studio in order to move to Texas to take a job as a Paramedic, I continued to teach here in Texas, just not as a living anymore. My wife & children has always came first so I needed a job with a steady income & benefits. I eventually went to California & tested for my 6th dan in 2003.

In 2010 I started a new journey in Gracie Jiu Jitsu under Pat Hardy & The Texas Punishment Crew. Pat Hardy is Royce Gracie first Black belt, Pat is also a former Karate & kickboxing champion as well. I have Since started Gracie Jiu Jitsu. I have trained with so many greats around the world in Jiu Jitsu the list is too long. I also am competing again in Jiu Jitsu. To this date I have fought in approx. 40 tournaments placing in all except the 2012 Pan American Championships were I was eliminated in the first round.

In this time I have won in all divisions of Jiu Jitsu beg, intermediate & Expert divisions. Taking home NAGA, Fight to Win & IBJJF titles. In 2013 I fought in the IBJJF No- GI Worlds in Long Beach California taking a Silver Medal. As the writing of this bio, I hold a 3 stripe Blue Belt in Jiu Jitsu under Royce Gracie Network & Pat Hardy.

In 2012 I tested for my 7th degree Black belt at the National Sport karate Museum. The Gathering I tested with many great champions Dan Super Anderson he was testing for 9th dan, Eric Merceless Loveless a former MMA great and a few others as well that are great martial artist. What made this test so special was it had a board of 50 Masters & Grandmasters including The Great Jim Harrison, J Pat Burlenson, Hashi Jerry Piddington, Troy Dorsey, Linda Denly, Irving Soto, Ron Lindsy, Billy Smith, Albert Hippert, Professor Gary Lee & so many others.

In Dec/2012 I was attending a seminar with my former Grandmaster Fred Villari he looked at my belt and asked when my last promotion was & with who, I told him he said good job in the middle of the seminar he called me out and promoted me to my 8th degree Black belt.

In Jan 2015 I was given the title of Hanshi & 10th degree Black Belt in Budo from the board of Extreme Budo Federation. This is a high honor & everyday, I plan on doing something that will give honor to what this title means to me.
